Alpinism (October) 2008

As hoped, the weather has been kind this month and Colin (Morrison) and myself got some really nice routes in (during the beginning of October). These were in the Mont Blanc Massif and the Ecrins. We did 2 routes in the Tour/Trient area (the north face of the Tete Blanche and the Petite Fourche on one day, the NE ridge of the Aiguille de Tour the next) just before the arrival of a weather system that left a fairly reasonable amount of snow in the Northern Alps. So we then went down to the Ecrins national park and did the traverse of Mont Pelvoux. This is a fantastic mountain and we were able to do a beautiful route - the Coolidge Couloir - in great condition. The descent (of the Violettes Glacier) was quite a mission however and a very long day was had! I shall post up a description of the descent soon to (hopefully) help anyone who wants to do it. The Ecrins is where I was first inspired to climb, so it was wonderful to go back there and I hope it won't be too long before I can get down there again.
